Diabetes mellitus is the medical condition in which the amount of glucose in the bloodstream is too great due to the body becoming unable to regulate glucose levels properly. Glucose is the body's 'energy' and comes from digesting carbohydrates from food and drinks we consume, glucose is also produced by the liver. Carbs comes from lots of different foods such as starchy foods including bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, fruit, sugar and other sweet foods.
The hormone insulin is vital for life. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and it helps the glucose in our blood to enter the cells where it is used to make the energy that our cells and muscles use. Diabetes then is the body inability to regulate blood glucose level due to insufficient or no insulin being produced by the pancreas.
